Character association and path analysis in fifty genetically diverse indigenous and exotic genotypes of chilli was studied for 16 important characters. The phenotypic and genotypic association of fruit yield was significantly positive with all the characters except days to first flowering and ten fruit weight. Early fruit yield and late fruit yield per plant were found highly significant and positive correlation with total fruit yield. The genotypic path co-efficient analysis revealed that ascorbic acid and chlorophyll content had high direct positive effect on total fruit yield.Keywords

An investigation was carried out at College of Horticulture, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot during summer 2011 to analyze the variability and heritability in 67 cluster bean genotypes for vegetable pod yield and its growth and yield parameters. All the characters showed highly significant (at P=0.01) difference. Maximum range of variability was observed for ten fresh pod weight (g), number of branches at 90 DAS and number of dry pod per plant (dual purpose type). High heritability coupled with high genetic advance over mean was observed for number of branches at 90 DAS, pod length (cm), and ten fresh pod weight (g). The results of present investigation suggested that selection based on number of dry pod per plant, fresh pod weight, pod length and number of branches at 90 DAS might bring improvement in vegetable pod yield of cluster bean and its growth and yield components characters.Keywords

Genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as a per cent over mean for thirty two characters were assessed by field evaluation of fifty chilli accessions at College of Horticulture, Bagalkot (Karnataka) during 2010-11. High degree of variation was observed for all characters. The difference between phenotypic co-efficient of variation and genotypic co-efficient of variation were found to be narrow for most of the traits. The high estimates of heritability was found for plant spread (N-S) at 60 days (64.27%) and 120 day (65.47%) and (E-W) at 60 days (60.56%), number of fruits per plant at first picking (98.20%), early yield (94.67%), late yield (95.62%) and total yield (91.37%). The fruit characters like fruit width (96.22%), stalk length (81.04%) and ten fruit weight (96.44%), chlorophyll-a (95.45%), chlorophyll-b (97.52%), total chlorophyll (97.87%) and ascorbic acid (98.30%), fresh red chilli yield (95.18%) and dry red chilli yield (93.71%), hundred seed weight (70.67%) and number of seeds per fruit (94.67%) had also recorded high heritability.Keywords

Study conducted at the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, Karnataka brought to light six species of insects, a spider and couple of birds as natural enemies in drumstick ecosystem during the year 2012-13. Out of the natural enemies recorded, six were predators and one was parasitoid on pests in drumstick. The lady bird beetle, Cheilomenes sexmaculata Fabricius, pentatomid bug, Eocanthecona furcellata (Wolf), green lace wing, Chrysoperla zastrowii sillemi (Esben-Peterson), gitonid, Cacoxenus sp., preying mantid, Anaxarcha limbata Goglio-Toss, an undetermined species of spider and a parasitoid, Agathis sp. were recorded.Keywords

The studies made under laboratory conditions using olfactometer indicated that the larvae as well as adults of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant could sense the prey liberated chemicals and use them in reaching the source. The first instar larvae and adults were attracted to the kairomones of Planococcus citri (Risso) in significantly more numbers than to the kairomones of other preys and non-preys namely Pulvinaria regalis Canard, Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus), Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), Aphis fabae Scopoli and Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The predator did not respond to the kairomones of preys' hosts significantly but the presence of prey on the host plants enhanced the olfaction as indicated by the more number of predators attracted to them. Furthermore, the adults were lured to the odour of their own individuals in significant numbers but not the larvae.Keywords

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of growth and yield parameters of sixteen cultivars of turmeric for commercial production in southern dry zone of Karnataka. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications at the farm of College of Horticulture, Mysore. Among the sixteen turmeric cultivars grown in southern dry zone of Karnataka, Maximum fresh rhizome yield of 33.67 t ha-1 was observed in Salem at par with Rajapuri (32.67 t ha-1), Prathibha (32.56 t ha-1) and CLT-325 (32.49 t ha-1), whereas highest cured rhizome yield was exhibited by Salem (8.31 t ha-1), CLT-325 (7.98 t ha-1) and Co-1 (7.01 t ha-1). With respect to quality in terms of curcumin content, PTS-24, Prabha and Prathibha were superior (7.20 %, 6.45 % and 6.39 %, respectively).Keywords

The investigation was undertaken at the College of Horticulture, UHS, Bagalkot, during 2013-2014 to study the bio efficacy of different insecticides against Agrotis segetum (Denis and Schiffermuller) and Spoladea (=Hymenia) recurvalis (Fabricius) on Palak. The results indicated that the newer molecules viz., emamectin benzoate 5 per cent SG @ 0.25g/lit indoxacarb 15.8 per cent EC @ 0.25 ml/lit and fipronil 5 per cent SC @ 1ml/ lit were found very effective in minimizing the larval population and were superior in reducing the foliage damage and also fetched higher yields of 15.00, 15.11 and 15.33 t/ha, respectively throughout period of experiment. The highest ICBR (50.21) was obtained from the treatment indoxacarb 15.8 per cent EC @ 0.25 ml/lit.Keywords

Choice tests were conducted under laboratory condition to standardize food bait using larvae of S. litura revealed the combination of rice bran + jaggery 20% + yeast 0.1% and rice bran + molasses 10% have proved best in attracting more larval populations. Efficacy of different combinations of poison baits was evaluated under field condition for the management of cutworm population in spinach. The jaggery based bait mixed with spinosad (rice bran + jaggery 20% + yeast 0.1% + spinosad @ 2.5ml/kg) proved best next to spinosad spray in reducing the larval population and leaf damage and thereby increased leaf yield over other baits and untreated control. Hence, jaggery based bait with spinosad may be recommended for management of cutworms in vegetable ecosystem.Keywords

Studies related to species diversity and seasonal incidence of fruit flies in drumstick ecosystems were conducted at University of Horticultural Sciences (UHS), Udyanagiri, Bagalkot, India during Rabi 2015-16 and Kharif 2016. During Rabi 2015 Shannon Wiener index (H’) of diversity of the fruit fly population was maximum (H’=0.64) during 6th SMW of (February) 2016. The Pielou’s evenness (J’) value was maximum during 6th SMW of (February) 2016 and 52nd SMW of (December) 2015 (0.92 and 0.79, respectively). The maximum Simpson diversity index value (0.66) was recorded during 6th SMW of (February) 2016. During 2016 maximum H value (H’=0.61) was recorded during 38th followed by 36th SMW of (September) 2016 (0.79). The Pielou’s evenness (J’) ranged from 0.33 to 0.88. Maximum (J’) value was recorded during 38th SMW of (September) 2016 (0.88) and 36th SMW of (September) 2016 (0.79).Keywords
